A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that a Canadian firm may require before recruiting a foreign worker.
A positive LMIA will demonstrate the requirement for a foreign worker to fill the position. It will also demonstrate that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available for the position. A positive LMIA is also known as a confirmation letter.
Employers of certain categories of temporary workers must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before the worker applies for a work permit. An LMIA is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada that allows the company to engage a temporary worker.
The processing time for LMIA might range from 15 days to several months, depending on the conditions. To begin with, the more exact and thorough an application is, the faster it will be completed.
Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) currently guarantees ten days of processing time for three categories:
Jobs that are in great demand
Work duration of 120 days or less
High-paying positions that aren't in the top 10%
After the employer files the LMIA application, the ESDC approves it. A confirmation letter or a valid LMIA confirms that a company can hire foreign workers to perform a job since no Canadians are available. Following the receipt of this certification, the individual may apply for a work permit in
The LMIA is generally valid for 18 months to support a work visa application. Note: In some situations, where an employer has particular timelines for a short employment opportunity, ESDC may issue LMIAs that expire in less than 18 months.
A job offer letter is a document sent by a Canadian business to you (as a temporary employee). It describes the specifics of your employment.
A "job offer letter" and a "offer of employment" are not the same thing. If your employer does not require an LMIA to engage you, they must submit the offer of employment through the Employer Portal. When you submit your application, the site creates an offer of employment number, which you will require when applying for your work visa.
